2. HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

2.1 Health Effects - Acute

Swallowed

Ingestion of very large amounts may cause diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting and cramps, weakness, convulsions and collapse Oral LD50 = 4820 mg/kg (Rat)

Eye

Irritating and may cause eye tissue damage.

Skin

Mildly irritating to skin Frequent and prolonged contact can cause dermatitis No effects should occur if promptly washed off

Inhaled

If present as high concentrations of airborne dust, prolonged contact may cause irritation to the nose and throat. At high temperatures, exposure to toxic decomposition products (oxides of nitrogen), can quickly cause acute respiratory problems

2.2 Health Effects - Chronic

Not considered a serious health hazard under normal circumstances. Small repeated oral doses of nitrates may cause weakness, depression, headache and mental impairment

2.3 First Aid

Swallowed

If the victim is conscious and alert, allow them to rinse their mouth then drink 2-4 cupfuls of milk or water. Seek medical attention.

Eye

Flush eyes immediately with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes occasionally lifting the upper and lower lids. Seek medical attention.

Skin

Flush skin with plenty of soap and water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Seek medical attention if effects persist.

Inhaled

Seek medical attention immediately. Remove from exposure to fresh air. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen.

First Aid Facilities

Ensure an eye bath and safety shower are available and ready for use.

2.5 Advice to Doctor

Treat symptomatically based on judgement of doctor and individual reactions of patient.

2.6 Toxicity Data

3. PRECAUTIONS FOR USE

3.1 Exposure Standards

No exposure limit has been specifically assigned to this product. Where no specific standard has been assigned, the recommended exposure standard for dust in general shall be 10 mg/m3 measured as inspirable dust. The exposure limit is expressed as a time weighted average (TWA) concentration over an 8 hour working shift, for a 5 day working week, and is the exposure standard recommended by Worksafe

3.2 Engineering Controls

Local exhaust ventilation is recommended.

3.3 Personal Protection

When using do not eat, drink or smoke. Wash thoroughly before smoking, eating or using the toilet facilities Avoid breathing the dust Wear overalls, boots, gloves and safety goggles or face shield Where high concentrations of airborne dust are present, a dust respirator conforming to AS1716 should be worn

3.4 Flammability

Not flammable Material is a strong oxidiser, and its heat of reaction with reducing agents or combustibles may cause ignition May support combustion in an existing fire

SAFE HANDLING INFORMATION

4.1 Storage / Transport

Store in a cool dry place Store apart from combustible materials, herbicides and fungicides

4.2 Packaging / Labelling

Hazard

Risk Phrases

R8 Contact with combustible material may cause fire.

Safety Phrases

S17 Keep away from combustible material.

S26 In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice.

S37/39 Wear suitable gloves and eye/face protection.

4.3 Spills and Disposal

Spills

Clean-up personnel should wear full protective clothing including breathing apparatus in dusty conditions. Clean up spills immediately. Avoid generating dusty conditions. Remove all sources of ignition.

Small spills can be swept up for reuse, or can be sluiced away with large quantities of water to drains Large spills (>100 kg) should be swept up and shovelled into suitable containers. Broken packages should be added to the container If ammonium nitrate is contaminated with fuels it should be thinly spread, then the spill area should be sluiced down with large quantities of water. Do not contaminate stream, rivers or water courses

Disposal

Not available

4.4 FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARD

Fire / Explosion

Not flammable For fires involving this material: A risk of explosion exists if the material is contaminated (eg by fuel oil) or if confined. An adjacent detonation may also cause explosion. Decomposition may give rise to toxic and noxious fumes. Provide maximum ventilation for escape of toxic vapour.

Extinguishing Media

Fire-fighters should wear full protective clothing and self-contained breathing apparatus. DO NOT use more water than is necessary. DO NOT allow jets of water to penetrate heap of molten ammonium nitrate. Keep water flowing until mas has cooled. DO NOT use steam or inert gases. Use equipment/media appropriate to surrounding fire conditions.
